THE FINAL LEG

Thursday 30th November
A last overnight stop at Shaker island brought “Fat Annie”, “Casa Tu” and “Intsomi” to Shaker island - within striking distance of the rally destination - Abu Tig marina on the West side of the Red Sea. After a morning snorkelling on the reef at Shaker island, the three boats arrived at Abu Tig in the afternoon, a month of unforgettable memories after leaving Cyprus.

Bathsheba Everdene and her Crew

Bathsheba Everdene is named after Bathsheba Everdene the heroin of Far from the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy. Her dinghy is Liddy Smallberry. She is a 10 metre Freedom Cat Ketch, designed by the American Gary Hoyt. Built in 1982 she was bought by Tazeena and Tim new. Tazeena has sailed extensively around the coast of France, Azores and circumnavigated the Baltic on the Cruising Association’s Millennium Rally. In 2001 Bathsheba sailed to the Mediterranean and has visited Spain, north Africa, Balearics, Tunisia, Panttileria, Sicily, Italy, the Adriatic, Greece and lastly to Turgetreis in Turkey to join the East Mediterranean Yacht Rally in 2006.

Intsomi and Her Crew

Intsomi is a 1996 Wauquiez Centurion 48S built in France. She started life working in the Caribbean and ended up languishing in Port Grimaud for a couple of years before being rescued and refitted over 2004/5. Bill and Pixi Bowen sold their first "big boat", a Catalina 42 called Toroa, late in 2005 and Intsomi's (second) maiden voyage (after refit) was in December 2006 from Port Grimaud to Mahon, Menorca. It was not a "fun" trip and a lot was learned about the importance of keeping the water on the outside of the boat rather than on the inside. In 2006 Intsomi cruised form Palma de Majorca to Tunisia, Sicily, Greece and finally Turkey. After a winter in Marmaris Intsomi went North into the Black Sea and visited Bulgaria before heading South for the Red Sea with the "SandS Rally". Bill and Pixi are still learning more about Intsomi and how to sail her well while enjoying the freedom and independence of the cruising life. At the same time they have benefitted enormously from the fellowship of other like minded mariners and the kindness of so many people met along the way.

Fat Annie and her Crew

Fat Annie is a Beneteau 44 Centre Cockpit built in France in 1995. The hull is designed by Bruce Farr and the yacht is named with the pet name of the previous owners dog! Robert and Jill are long time dinghy sailors who "progressed" into bigger boats, initially by joining a partnership in a 36ft. Beneteau. This was our six year apprenticeship, which equiped us with the courage to finally go it alone. We bought Fat Annie in 2002 Majorca and then made our way via Sardinia and Sicily to spend our first winter in Malta. From there we have cruised extensively in Croatia and Greece, spending a fantastic winter in Tunisia. The next three years have taken us back to the greek Islands and accross to Turkey. We spent a very happy winter in Marmaris Yacht Marine last year making lots of new friends and spent this summer cruising the beautiful Turkish coast. Finally, in October, we met with other Sands Rally cruisers in Cyprus before setting off for the Red Sea.
